Good Morning,

I am a transfer student from the Borough of Manhattan Community College where I was pursuing Engineering Science. I was ecstatic when I was told that I am accepted to the City College of New York literally two days before the Spring, 2019 semester started. You see, it is my dream to study Mechanical Engineering and Childhood Education. First thing is first, I want to specialize in robotics, because as a young student in high school, I fell in love with robotics. I fell in love with programming machines. One of the best feelings in the world is building something with your own two hands, and programming it to do its task, and then watching it come to life, and I would love to experience that for the rest of my life!

I do not know of a lot of robot companies; however, NASA is the first that comes to mind. When I was a younger girl, I once had a school trip where we visited a NASA space station look-alike where kids got to experience missions that astronauts would be assigned to. Forgive me for not knowing the exact name of the location, but I do remember that I was on the team that had to fix the probe that we were sending to the moon! It was one of the best times I have ever had in my life, and as a young girl I learned that I love to fix and build. NASA would be my dream job, but sadly there are no NASA stations in New York City and I love this city. Of course, there are plenty of other options for me, one of the top being VEX Robotics. This is the company that supplied the tools I used in my robotics classes in high school. They are all about educating and empowering the newer generation of innovators, thinkers and builders. I feel that if I can be a part of someone’s education in any way, I’m doing my part to better this world. With Engineering and a generation of innovators, we can really tackle the issues in this world and look directly in the face of a better future.

That’s where the Childhood Education degree comes in. Before I met robotics, teaching was it for me. Ever since I can remember, every single aunt, uncle, cousin, grandparent, teacher who has ever asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, always received the same response, “a teacher.” I’m not sure how this got into my tiny head, but my grandfather was a teacher. So was my mother, and that’s all I wanted for myself. I realized that everything you are and everything you become is directly related to the teachers you encounter in your life time. Every single person whether they have the role of teacher or not, has some type of impact in a person’s life and who they become. The way I see it, without teacher’s you don’t have language, you don’t have culture, you don’t have doctors, you don’t have lawyers, you don’t have engineers, you don’t have communication, love, or peace. To specify, someone has to teach the doctor his medicine, someone has to teach a lawyer how to fight for their clients endlessly, someone has to teach others how to communicate their ideas, thoughts, feelings, creations, and etc. Let me also clarify that when I say “whether they have the role of teacher or not” what I mean is that regardless of them professionally being a teacher/educator. See, your mother, your father, your sister, your best friend, your husband… all of those people can fill the role of a teacher in one aspect of your life or another, and what they teach you, whether through lectures, punishments, or heartbreaks, is everything that can make or break you. That is why I feel like teaching is the most important job a person can have, because it plays a humongous role in determining the things I will be exposed to, and who I will become. Well, there you have it, my young story, I look forward to reading or hearing about yours, if you will share that with me.

Most Sincerely,

Farha Zaman
